3. DBS (CRB) Check
Along with being 21 years old and having a 3-year-old driving licence, filling out the DBS application form for cab drivers is an important step in acquiring a PCO licence in London. Since 2012, all private hire drivers have been eligible for an enhanced criminal record DBS check. The level of disclosure necessary for this position is provided via an enhanced DBS check. It will reveal the following information:
- Convictions spent or unspent
- Warnings
- Reprimands
- Any further police information deemed pertinent
A DBS check is essential for a PCO licence in London so that employers may verify that a private hire driver is of good character and can safely carry public members. It can also make passengers feel more secure.
Important: You must submit your complete PCO Licence London application bundle to TFL within 90 days of finishing the CRB check. The lifespan of a CRB Check is just 90 days.
4. Private hire Medical Check
You must be medically fit and undergo a PCO Medical Check with a GP to complete the PHV/204 form included in the application to become a PCO Licensed Private Hire Driver in London. This medical test will be performed to the same standards as those for drivers of large goods vehicles (LGV/HGV), buses and coaches (PCV/PSV) and will meet the DVLA Group 2 standard.
The test will only last around 30 minutes and will consist of questions on the following subjects:
- Heart and endocrine system
- Vision
- Psychiatric
- Musculoskeletal
- Neurological
The doctor will complete the remainder of the PHV/204 form, who will sign it and place their surgery stamp on it after assessing your responses and medical records to establish if you fulfil the DVLA Group 2 medical standards. Following that, you must submit this form together with your London PCO licence application.
Please Note: The NHS does not cover this expense, and you may have to pay anything from £50 to £160 for the test. You are required to utilise a licenced general practitioner (GP) who has access to your complete medical file.
5. Application Checklist
The final step is to ensure that the forms have been accurately filled out and that all relevant supplementary information has been provided with the London PCO Licence Application package.
Please Note: You will also need to certify that you have at least a B1 level of English proficiency. The Safety, Equality, and Regulatory Understanding Assessment will determine your English language reading and writing skills.
